Read: If you have to cry, go outside by Kelly Cutrone

This is quite an unorthodox, straight to the point no bullshit guide to life and business by Kelly Cutrone. I’ve seen a few glimpses of her in videos online, where she is portrayed as Queen Biatch and I wasn’t sure what kind of  person she is. I’ve never really contemplated on it. So I was quite surprised when I picked up this book. Happily so.

I discovered a person, a soul -  behind the book that seems like a loving and compassionate and honest person. The kind of person you want to be friends with or actually work for, someone who really cares about the dedication you bring to the table at work and can push you in the right direction.

Kelly also proves that  just because you evolve and educate yourself spiritually, you can still be assertive and tell people to go fuck themselves if the situation requires. A compassionate and loving person need not to be a doormat – which is a great point raised by Kelly.

This is a great, quick read, if you want a new fresh perspective outside the mold of what is in mainstream media portrayed as the norm – what you should do with your life. A comforting book with advice on how to pursue your passion as a career, deal with motherhood while single and  how to choose the right people for YOU to hang out with.

There where two other aspects of this book which I really liked. One of them was the topic of religion – you don’t have to choose one, you can choose parts of all religions which resonates with you and build your own. The second thing I want to mention is that Kelly points out that instead of investing a lot of energy in trying to fit into a mold, put the energy towards realizing your dreams and letting yourself blossom. All  your points of differentiation may just turn out to be your best assets in building your own personal brand and bring you success.

Kelly also shares, how she lost everything, but then got back on track with her life, and built a business from nothing – again. So fabulously and dazzlingly inspiring. If that’s not a motivating and inspirational read to enrich your own life and take some strength from, then I don’t know what is! Kudos!

The book is available on Amazon and Apple iBooks if you fancy yourself a closer look.

Read: Steve Jobs biography by Walter Isaacson and my 5 comfort points from the book

Steve Jobs Biography

I sometimes order books and pile them up in front of me on my desk as a treat for myself. Once I reach one of my progress points or goals, I get to treat myself to one of the inspirational books I’ve piled up on my desk. This was one of them – and I had Steve’s stern eyes gazing down at me as I wrote my own book during this summer.Quite scary and motivating in the same time ;)

So here is what I thought of the book in short – it’s a slow starter, but a inspirational read for anyone that is interested in his life but also the story behind Apple. (Yes I am an Apple geekess, but my judgement of a book is not clouded by that ;) )

Here are my 5 comforting points that I took with me from this read:

1. Simplify, simplify and yes, simplify – remove the clutter and streamline your work and offering. Do a few things expectational well!

2. Eat clean for optimal mental performance and clarity of mind - there is a reason people go on juice or water fasts. First you go weak, then you get energized and  euphoric almost. Often people get great ideas during this state. I’m yet myself to experience a juice fast, however I eat a clean vegan diet, consisting of 50-80% raw food. I’m very sensitive to what I put in to myself and if I eat pasta or breads, I feel how this effects my body and mind. There is a difference in people who eat clean food – there is no “4 a clock slump” and you have a clear and focused mind. So yes – what you fuel you stuff in your mouth ultimately effects your brain :)

3. Believe in yourself and your idea – no matter what. Hold on to your idea, develop it, nurture it and do not deviate from believing in your idea and yourself.

4. I rather have a reality distortion field then a really pessimistic view of the world – I can understand that people get pissed of with Steve’s “crazy view of reality” sometimes (or often). However, it pushed people to get things done even if they didn’t believe in it or themselves at the time. I rather wear “rosetinted glasses” and view the world from the perspective that all can be done and magic can be achieved – then not to.

5. Single-task – focus your full attention to the task at hand or your current project. That’s how you achieve and produce quality and greatness.

You might wonder why I use the word “comforting”. Well that’s because I find it comforting to read this book and notice these 5 points above.  It resonates with me. And what I believe in. Steve Jobs was a great man, making reality of his visions and it’s comforting to read the book about this human who achieved all this – and what beliefs and ideas he had during this process. From a garage to a multimillion company.

I’m not supposed to be here. Writing this at this very moment, that is. But I am. Hello procrastination – in any shape or form – which can be such a temptation right now. Even cleaning the flat becomes some sort of delicious adventure which is hard to resist.  However fueled by Green Jasmin Tea I am burning my candles well into midnight working non-stop with my eBook – Easy Digital Marketing. I have a new middle name and that is discipline!

So to the point of this blog post!

One of the sections in my book is about why your website is so important in relation to digital marketing, so of course, as the dedicated web geekess I am, it’s the first sample chapter released from the book:

Easy Digital Marketing

A better landing and holding page for my book in progress. This is it, now I will focusing on finishing it, rather then playing around in Photoshop and pulling my hair with Dreamweaver 4.  I’ll save that for another day :)

I love Paperblanks

One of my favorite things is to buy new notebooks. The other day I stumbled across a large selection of Parperblank journals that threw me in to decision-making-hell :)

I ended up with a lovely Grolier Ornamentali Notebook with blank pages.

“I’m supporting A Good Week because I believe businesses should think about their social impact and work harder to tackle tough social and environmental problems. My aim, through our foundation, Virgin Unite, is to help change the way businesses and the social sector work together – driving business to be a force for good.”

While I am at it, I do recommend to read his books, especially Business Stripped Bare.

Forgotten drinks For a remembered Friend

Saturday, July 10th, 2010

Not to long ago one of my dear friends left London for new adventures in San Fransisco. Before she left, I together with some other friends of both me and her (my brave friend who left London that is), secretly made a book for her mixing life’s best ingredients – friendship, cocktails and memories. All into her very own book, this to make sure she would never forget us, her old skanky London friends, once she made new shiny California friends.

We all contributed with one cocktail recipe each, an appropriate (embarrassing) picture or two and a text from the heart. Which I then simply laid out in InDesign, using a set of templates which I easily downloaded from Blurb.

A week later, our hard work and expertise – a result of vast experience from activities which happens to ruins ones liver  – was delivered neatly in a  hard cover, with a stylish dust jacket.

Using Blurb was as easy as one, two three. You download your templates for InDesign, based on the cover, paper and desired amount of pages. Then you simply design and layout your book, export to PDF (after installing one of Blurbs color profiles – dead easy) and upload to Blurb. Choose your desired shipping time and voila – your book arrives.

If you don’t have the software or knowledge, then you can download Blurbs own layout software and produce your book.

I am very impressed with the quality of both the print and the paper, and I will definitely use Blurb again, however this time for my own creative projects.

View a sample below, sans the cover. Do bear in mind that the layout for the book pages was set-up to be viewed as a spread while reading, hence the left and the right white space.
